An Environment for International Teaching Experience


TUNAS MEKAR INDONESIA

Tunas Mekar Indonesia (TMI) is the school where I took up my practicum teaching. TMI is located in Jl. Arif Rahman Hakim No. 36, Jagabaya III, Way Halim, Kota Bandar Lampung, Lampung 35142, Sumatra, Indonesia. TMI is one of the private schools in Bandar Lampung City that offers quality education and real-life learning experiences.


I. TMI: A Family for Better Opportunities…

One of the values of TMI is family-oriented. Pupils, students and staff and teachers have a family-oriented relationship. The teachers act like older brothers and sisters to the learners. This is an effective way to teach the pupils and the students the value of good life

III. No Cellphone Policy

NO CELLPHONE POLICY is implemented in TMI due to the following reasons.

· To improve discipline inside the classroom;

· To avoid texting and playing games;

· To avoid constant distraction inside/outside the classroom;

· To avoid reduction in learning;

· To improve the interaction among students.

Before the implementation of the policy, the school administration organized a conference with all the school stakeholders especially the parents. This is an example of a parent-teacher partnership that can help the students to be positively developed.


IV. Curriculum

Senior High School is composed of 3-year study of 50 subjects. TMI - SHS apply the KTSP (Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan) Curriculum or School-Based Curriculum (SBC) with the process of majoring from the beginning of entry.

Students are guided by professional teachers in their fields. This is an advantage for students who will attend the school. In TMI, teaching and learning are developed according to the students' character and the situation of the school. As a result, the teacher can develop his methods and techniques in teaching and learning process and increase the students' competencies.

To further develop the skills and talents of the students, TMI organizes extracurricular activities related to arts, sciences and sports. Extracurricular activities consist of music, athletics, coding and foreign languages, as well as post-school drop-in programs until 6pm. Also, the students have great opportunities to participate in regional and national competitions. In addition, TMI-SHS has school programs that hone leadership and entrepreneurship.


V. Assessment

TMI is using an electronic record of Students Leaning Achievement

How are learners assessed in the class?

Total Achievement (100%) = Knowledge (50%) + Skills (20%) + Attitude (20%) + Presence (10%)

In TMI, assessment has four components. These are Knowledge, Skills, Attitude, Presence.

Assessment of knowledge comprises the 50 percent of the learner’s total achievement. Knowledge component includes Daily Assessment (Quizzes), Homework, Mid and Final Examination.

Assessment of skills comprises the 20 percent of the learner’s total achievement. Skills component includes Performance, Project, and Portfolio.

Assessment of attitude comprises the 20 percent of the learner’s total achievement. Skills component includes Honesty, Discipline, Responsibility, Tolerance, Teamwork, Politeness, Confidence, and Faith.

Studentship or Attendance comprise 10 percent of the learner’s total achievement.


VI. Not just a School of Knowledge but a School of Life

· TMI wants to make students feel at home by creating a school environment characterize by harmonious family relationship between staff and students.

· TMI provides opportunities for students to try new things and learn by allowing them to immerse outside the four corners of the classroom.

· The school community warmly welcomes learners from all backgrounds and opportunities.

· TMI is a privileged place where everyone is given opportunity to develop their potential.

· TMI wants to build a foundation of education and good character.

· The school community works with parents to help students to grow maximally.

· In addition to leading academic standard, TMI ensures to educate learners with a balanced and quality curriculum.
